July 2020 Newsletter

July 1, 2020 By Chris Norfolk

Welcome to the July 2020 Newsletter.  RVC Newsletters are intended to keep you up to date on events in our community as well as RVC initiatives. 2020 has been a strange year so far for everyone, but there are some positive developments to talk about. Please have a look and drop us an email with suggestions that you might have to improve the newsletter.

Coronavirus & RVC’s Focus for 2020

Several months of social lockdown was hard. Many of us took to the trails where we could get fresh air, exercise, relieve stress, and focus only on the 2 metres in front of us. Having a number of well maintained trail networks was a blessing for the whole community when there wasn’t much else that one could safely do. If you felt the same way, say thanks to the next person you see out clearing deadfall, blowing leaves, or tuning a berm. We have not escaped impact though.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that RVC made the difficult decision to cancel all of our events that involve large gatherings. So 2020 will be the first in many years without the Woolastook 4 race, the short-track series, or the skills clinics that have become rider favorites. Instead, RVC will be focusing on trail access, trail building, and strengthening relationships with the landowners and land managers in our community. It will be a lean year for RVC, as many of the events that we’ve had to cancel are big sources of revenue for the club. Not to worry though, as we’ve already seen our members and businesses in the area rally to our cause (more on that later).

Trail Updates

MVP

It has been a challenging spring at MVP, arguably the heart and soul of our trail network. First, we had to say good-bye to many of the most popular intermediate (blue) trails in the city when our access to Mr. Wilson’s woodlot was withdrawn. Favorites like Wilson’s Loop, Country View, Hole-in-the-Wall, Swanky, and Best Bitter are now closed. As sad as we were to announce this change we thank Mr. Wilson for his generous cooperation with RVC over the years. His property was a catalyst that accelerated mountain biking in Fredericton and it’s unlikely we’d be where we are today without it.

Next MVP experienced a rash of vehicle break-ins that resulted in thousands of dollars in property damage and theft. We haven’t heard of any new reported incidents in the last 3 weeks but we encourage everyone to continue to Park Smart!

Despite all this there has been some exciting work going on at MVP, particularly over in the ‘enduro zone’. Fern Gully, V-Fib, and DNF have all been tuned-up by the trail crew and work on a new climbing trail has started thanks to an early June trail day! Looking good.

A busy spring at MVP has resulted in a lot of fresh features. Look at that fresh loam!

Woolastook

Woolastook has never been in better shape and it’s seen a lot of traffic this spring. In fact, so  much traffic that RVC partnered with the campground operator to install an expanded parking lot at the trailhead. The Woolastook loop route is a great family-friendly option for introducing new people to mountain biking.

The new expanded parking lot!

Islandview

Improvements are also coming to Islandview thanks to a partnership with the Maritime College of Forest Technology (the land manager). RVC and MCFT will be posting all new trail signage this summer in order to help riders navigate the area. This is good news. That terrain can get you turned around and there are spots where cell service isn’t happening. Signage will be a nice improvement project to build upon as the club develops a relationship with the MCFT. Expect to see a call for a volunteer trail day or two in order to get everything installed!

Odell Park

Blue Dot trail in Odell park

Odell Park’s plan has been in development by the city for more than 2 years now and it’s now nearing an outcome that will have a place for riding in the long-term. RVC, and the mountain-bike community engaged with the city’s process in an organized, respectful, and considerate manner. We met with city staff leading up to the most recent plan and presented solutions for sustainable multi-use trails. We believe the city has listened.

The final management plan for Odell park will place the park’s ecology as the top priority. We are calling for a multidisciplinary team that involves city staff, local ecologists, RVC trailbuilders, and other stakeholders to assess each trail individually for sustainability. We expect there to be a need for upgrades and re-routing in some areas, and the retiring and reforesting of certain trails. Our key ask to the city was that when one trail must end, another begins at the same time – and that RVC be given the opportunity to be involved in delivering both processes. We are hopeful this plan passes full council in July!

Membership

Like we talked about above, 2020 is going to be a tough year on RVC financially and that’s why we are depending on you more than ever to spread the word about the work we do. We have memberships available at an affordable cost for everybody and there’s options to contribute more if that’s something you’re able to do. Already 2020 has been a record year for Gold and Platinum members so thank you so much for your support! Feeling like you’d like to upgrade your membership after reading this sweet newsletter? No problem! Just contact us and we’ll take your money and sort you all out. We are constantly looking to provide new value to members so if you have ideas about how we can do that drop us an email or message and let us know.

Update on the Odell Park Plan

June 24, 2020 By Chris Norfolk

Riders,

We have news about the future of mountain biking in Odell Park. The park planning process that began with open houses in October of 2017 is ready to wrap up with a final plan being presented to the City Council’s Community Services Committee today (June 24th) at noon. All your letter-writing, survey participation, talking to City Councillors, and engagement with the process has put us in a much better position. You spoke about a love for the park, your desire for sustainable trails, and your willingness to be part of the solution. Seems like somebody listened.

The City engaged with RVC over the last month in preparing the final plan for Odell and we were able to secure several key points:

• We asked for acknowledgement that well designed and maintained mountain bike trails are sustainable and have a place in Odell.

• We asked for an individual sustainability review of each trail, in consultation with RVC, rather than a broad-brush approach that would summarily close every piece of existing single-track.

• We asked that if a trail review concludes that there are no options to upgrade/reroute an existing single-track and decommissioning is necessary, that this would happen at the same pace as new trails are built.

• We asked that RVC be involved in any new trail design and construction in the future that comes from this plan.

• We asked for the narrative around conflict between users in the park that singled out cyclists to be removed.

City staff agreed with RVC on these points and included them in the final plan to be presented to Council. We’re excited to work with the City on this. The City has told us that they will engage with RVC and other stakeholders who value the park as they implement the plan and we are trusting that they will do that in good faith. Let’s be sure that we do the same. We believe that the plan that is being presented to the Community Services Committee today could be the basis for long term sustainable mountain biking in Odell Park. If it passes this committee today it will go to full City Council in the near future.

We will keep you updated.

Spring Riding
We are all keen to get back on our bikes but we ask that you keep in mind that riding when the trails are muddy causes erosion that takes a lot of work to fix. Please do your part to minimize trail damage by not riding when the trails can’t take it. If you leave ruts, don’t ride is a good general ‘rule of thumb’. In the meantime, if the trails are muddy, why not do some trail work or get some miles on a dirt road adventure ride?
Trail Days
There’s more to building a trail than moving rocks and dirt. Trails are usually part of larger systems that are the result of careful and diligent planning and collaboration. These trail systems must serve the needs of multiple user groups and take environmental and geographical factors into account.

RVC would like to see all cyclists that use the trails participate in maintaining and building them. Trail days are social, so be sure to join the Mountain Bike Fredericton Facebook Group to see when days are posted/scheduled and join your fellow cyclists in improving our trail systems. The Getaway draw

We are pleased to announce our biggest fundraiser ever:  The Getaway Draw.

A $20 ticket will get you the chance to win a $5000 Travel Voucher from a local travel agency towards the vacation of your dreams… Or the choice of taking a cool $3,000 in cash instead of the trip. A maximum of 2000 tickets will be sold.

For a successful fundraiser, we need the help of all our members to sell tickets.  The funds raised will help us add to our existing trail system and improve what we already have. Tell your friends from away that payment can be made on the RVC website and a ticket will be generated and sent to the purchaser. Here’s full info and how to get involved.

Local Bike Shops Up the Ante!

As an incentive to reward the efforts of members selling paper tickets, Radical Edge and Savage’s Bicycle Center have made a pledge to RVC: for every 10 Getaway Draw tickets a member sells, their name will go into a draw for a $1000 gift certificate that can be redeemed at the Radical Edge or Savage’s – your choice.

Sell 20 tickets, get 2 ballots! Sell 80, get 8 ballots!!! There aren’t many members in this contest yet, so we need you to help sell, and your chances of winning are really good. Thanks to Radical Edge and Savage’s for your continued support!

RVC Summer Student Job Opportunities

Looking for a summer job, or do you know a post-secondary student looking for work? RVC plans to hire two full time students for this summer, for a minimum of 8 weeks. The new process is quick and simple, with no online processing fees. If you don’t want to pay by credit card or Paypal, shoot us an email to arrange alternate payment. Your $ goes directly towards trail building and maintenance!

2015 AGM in Brief

Our AGM was well attended on February 23rd, where members were updated on all the efforts and successes from the previous year, including: trail reports and plans, new initiatives, access at Island View and UNB woodlot trail systems, 2016 Summer Student program, expansion proposals for Woolastook, Minto, and MVP trail systems, race dates, kit orders, fundraising projects, community partnerships, sponsorship updates, RVC Winterbike presentation, and much more. Here are the meeting minutes.

Spring Riding

There’s some beautiful weather forecast and we’re all keen to get back on our bikes. But we that you keep in mind that riding when the trails are muddy causes erosion that takes a lot of work to fix. Please do your part to minimize trail damage by not riding when the trails can’t take it. If you leave ruts, don’t ride – that’s a good rule of thumb all year around. There’s not much snow left and the woods should dry out quickly, but in the meantime, if the trails are muddy, why not do some trail work or get some miles on a dirt road adventure ride?

Upcoming Events

Getaway Draw
RVC will be selling Getaway Draw tickets at Savage’s Bike Swap and Sale: April 15,16, & 17 at the Capital Exhibit Centre. The draw will be April 29 at Hampton Inn & Suites.

MVP Trail Day
Remsoft Inc. of Fredericton generously donated trail building funds to RVC for development of 2km more mini-X trail at the MVP trail system! We will be holding a volunteer trail day as soon as all the snow is gone to clear brush and make ready for the mini-X work to start once the ground dries up. Stay tuned for date and details on our Facebook page and website.

RVC Spring Kick-off
Once the warm weather dries out or trails and brings out the masses, we will be hosting a family and dog friendly trail day and BBQ to celebrate the new mountain biking season. Again, stay tuned for date, location and details on our Facebook page and website.
